Turkey Coup

What's Really behind Turkey's Coup Arrests?
by Soner Cagaptay | ForeignPolicy.com

For the last several decades, the Turkish military was untouchable; no one dared to criticize the military or its top generals, lest they risk getting burned. The Turkish Armed Forces were the ultimate protectors of founding father Kemal Ataturk's secular legacy, and no other force in the country could seriously threaten its supremacy. Not anymore.
On Feb. 22, 49 officers -- including active-duty generals, admirals, and former commanders of the Turkish navy and air force -- were arrested on allegations of plotting a coup against the government.

Renewed tension looms in Turkey after military arrests.

* 5-High-ranking military arrests stir fresh Turkey concern.

ISTANBUL, Feb 26 (Reuters) - Two retired generals were charged on Friday over a plot to unseat the government, raising the stakes in a potential stand-off between the ruling party and armed forces that has hit Turkish markets.

The two were the most senior military figures so far to be charged over an alleged 2003 plot. Hours earlier, police had conducted a second wave of military detentions, widening an investigation that has seen more than 30 officers arrested and prompted an emergency summit among Turkey's leaders.

It's time for Gordon Brown to listen to majority opinion in Britain and stop wasting Afghan and British lives in a war which has no other purpose that to save the reputation of politicians and military leaders who cannot face admitting defeat.

Protecting civilians and protecting troops in Afghanistan.

By Erica Gaston Friday, February 19, 2010

The testing ground for what a counterinsurgency-style offensive should look like is taking place in Marjah right now. There is every evidence that despite difficult circumstances, Afghan and international troops in Marjah are taking seriously restrictions on tactics that might cause civilians harm or imperil future plans for stabilizing and "holding" the area. Strangely though, the fact that they're taking this so seriously has been a cause for some concern back in the States.

Just as progress is being made in reducing the civilian casualties that created such public backlash against international forces in Afghanistan, public commentary has focused on how counterinsurgency-driven restrictions on airstrikes or other tactics might also be complicating force protection. Reports from embedded journalists have shared troop frustrations at requirements like 72 hour surveillance on a compound before it can be bombed, or not firing on unarmed Afghans, even if they suspect those individuals were insurgents who simply dropped their weapons moments before. Some opinion pieces and  roundtables have worried that the restrictions put international troops at greater risk because they cannot fight back with everything they have.

Is Operation Moshtarak a fool’s mission?

By Norine MacDonald

We should be asking some critical questions about the now, much-publicized NATO and Afghan forces operation to take Marjah district in Helmand. For starters: How does this operation fit into the overall strategy for Afghanistan -- why Marjah and why now?

One can argue that U.S. and NATO forces have not had significant military success in Afghanistan since the initial invasion, despite the expansion of ISAF's mandate across the country between 2004 and 2006. And one can argue further that the reverse is true: The Taliban's military strategy has been successful and their territorial influence has in fact increased dramatically in recent years, as they now dominate the south and east, and are rapidly increasing their presence in the north. Taliban forces have also closed in on Kabul, as evidenced by the most recent major attacks within the capital itself.

From now on, they'll have to explain to the British consulate in Tel Aviv and the British Home Office that they were not in Dubai, had not participated in the assassination and had not misplaced their passports.

The US Military: A Mindset of Barbarism.

photoOn December 27, in the eastern Kunar region of Afghanistan, ten Afghans, eight of whom were schoolchildren, were dragged from their beds and shot by US forces during a nighttime raid. Afghan government investigators said the eight students were aged from 11 to 17 years.

This incident is but one example of countless atrocities US military personnel have carried out in the occupation of Iraq and Afghanistan. In Iraq, US military personnel torturing detainees in Abu Ghraib, Iraqi civilians suffering the violence  meted out by US forces, or US forces detaining schoolchildren in Baghdad, the list of atrocities is seemingly endless.

What next for Afghanistan?

Feb 10, 2010 | After Israel militarily ransacked Gaza, killed civilians and flattened the buildings. A similar conference was held in Europe with a lot of promises and pledges. A lot of money supposed to rain in Gaza. By now there should be a hectic and busy with rebuilding activities going on. The wounded should be receiving treatments. The people should be getting breads and meat. None on this took place. If fact Gaza is still under siege, Gaza is still a forbidden enclosure, Gaza is still the world largest open air prison. Gaza is still kept alive by the series of primitive tunnels infrastructure built into Egypt. The tunnels are the lifelines that brought into Gaza - the much needed foods and medical needs. All these tunnels are still frequently bombed and bombarded by Israel. Egypt is putting the last nails into the coffin "Gaza" by driving in iron curtains into their tunnels. Where are the big talks in Europe. Who are the real terrorists? If Europe and America fails in this promise of theirs? How on earth, can we expect those in Afghanistan to believe them and their Afghanistan London Conference! The Conferences, only looks good and beautiful propaganda for media consumptions and the TV shows. The reality is far from that. Get your London act together, fulfilled your pledges to Gaza. Give an example for the people of Afghanistan to be more optimistic and has a reason to look forward to your promises.

The occupation of Afghanistan - no longer legitimate!

Recall the main reason for sending the troops to Iraq, yes, it was regime change! What was the reason for sending troops to Afghanistan, it was to apprehend Ben Laden and gang. But it grew into one hell of a regime change exercise, which saw the installation of an unpopular regime of Hamid Karzai and the murders of thousands Iraqi civilians mostly women and children. Led by the US army and military contractors (read mercenaries), hundreds of thousands of US and NATO troops poured into Afghanistan to subdued the people of Afghanistan into accepting the Karzai regime. Initially under the pretext of pursuing Ben Laden and his Alqaeda gang said to be numbering a mere, less than five hundred

Anwar Ibrahim – Sodomy : The sequel

It is almost 11 years since Anwar Ibrahim, newly sacked as deputy prime minister, was first slapped with trumped-up charges of sodomy and corruption (abuse of power), and subsequently put through two trials which were condemned around the world as manifestly flawed and politically motivated. He spent six years in detention, in solitary confinement throughout, after his conviction on the first (corruption) charge, but at the final level of appeal against conviction on the charge of committing sodomy, he was acquitted and released on 2 September 2004. The two cases were interrelated, although tried separately: the corruption charge was that he had abused his position to direct the police to halt investigations into his alleged sexual misconduct.
