Exclusive: Obama authorizes secret help for Libya rebels

Main Image

By Mark Hosenball - WASHINGTON | Wed Mar 30, 2011 6:16pm EDT

(Reuters) - President Barack Obama has signed a secret order authorizing covert U.S. government support for rebel forces seeking to oust Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi, government officials told Reuters on Wednesday.

Obama signed the order, known as a presidential "finding", within the last two or three weeks, according to government sources familiar with the matter.

Such findings are a principal form of presidential directive used to authorize secret operations by the Central Intelligence Agency. This is a necessary legal step before such action can take place but does not mean that it will.

As is common practice for this and all administrations, I am not going to comment on intelligence matters," White House spokesman Jay Carney said in a statement. "I will reiterate what the president said yesterday -- no decision has been made about providing arms to the opposition or to any group in Libya."

The CIA declined comment.

VOAvideo on Mar 29, 2011 - Israel's border with Gaza has been the scene of rising tensions. Palestinian militants have been firing rockets at Israel, some hitting within a few kilometers of Tel Aviv. Israel has responded with air strikes and shelling, further stoking anger among the Palestinians.

Tel Aviv's Command To Attack Libya

According to this Priest Nathanael

Libya’s Late, Great Rights Record

Until Col. Muammar el-Qaddafi’s violent suppression of unrest in recent weeks, the United Nations Human Rights Council was kind in its judgment of Libya. In January, it produced a draft report on the country that reads like an international roll call of fulsome praise, when not delicately suggesting improvements. Evidently, within the 47-nation council, some pots are loath to call kettles black, at least until events force their hand. Last week Libya was suspended from the body, and the report was shelved. Here are excerpts. TOM KUNTZ

• Algeria noted the efforts of the Libyan Arab Jamahiriya [people’s republic] to promote human rights, which reflected the country’s commitment to complying with Human Rights Council resolutions and cooperating with the international community.

• Qatar praised the legal framework for the protection of human rights and freedoms, including, inter alia, its criminal code and criminal procedure law, which provided legal guarantees for the implementation of those rights.
• The Syrian Arab Republic praised the Libyan Arab Jamahiriya for its serious commitment to and interaction with the Human Rights Council and its mechanisms

Defense Secretary Robert Gates the conman.

Defense Secretary Robert Gates today tried to spin Americans on the "progress" of the Afghanistan War. Despite his assertions, the facts are clear: insurgent attacks jumped 64 percent this year; more civilians died than any prior year of the conflict; and the "security bubbles" talked about in Helmand and Kandahar provinces situated in increasingly violent parts of the country.

UK military deaths in Afghanistan and Iraq.

The number of British military deaths in operations in Afghanistan since 2001 stands at 358, following the death of a soldier from the Royal Army Veterinary Corps killed in a gunfight on 1 March 2011.

Two other soldiers, serving with the Royal Logistic Corps, died as a result of what was thought to be a domestic fire at Camp Bastion, in Helmand province, on 14 February.

If the fire is found not to be the result of enemy action, it will mean 44 service personnel have died from accidents, illness, or non-combat injuries. Others have yet to be assigned a cause of death. Details of fatalities are in the table below.

IHRC is delighted to hear about the imminent release of Khairat Al-Shater, Deputy Chairman of the Muslim Brotherhood, after serving 4 years of a 7 year sentence. His release was authorised by the Supreme Council of Armed Forces this afternoon.

IHRC has been campaigning for Al-Shater, as one of its prominent prisoners of faith, asking for his release as well as the abolishment of military courts used against civilians.

Al-Shater, along with other members of the Muslim Brotherhood, were acquitted by a civil court on 29th January 2007. The case was then sent to a Military Tribunal by President Mubarak where they were sentenced to between 3-7 years, on 15th April 2008.

IHRC welcomes his release and calls on the Egyptian authorities to release all political prisoners.
