For the past month, the Associated Press (with an assist from NYPD Confidential) has spotlighted a secret NYPD spying operation that targets hundreds of Muslim mosques, schools, businesses, student groups, non-governmental organizations and individuals. 

 It seems no exaggeration to say that the NYPD has infiltrated every level of Muslim life in NYC. Last week, the AP described how the NYPD has spied on the city's Moroccan communities. 

 The police watched Moroccan restaurants, gyms, barbershops, meat markets and taxi companies -- and compiled a list of every known Moroccan taxi driver, the AP reported. 

 Dubbed the "The Moroccan Initiative," this police operation placed both Moroccan immigrants and Moroccan-Americans "under surveillance and scrutinized where they ate, prayed and worked, not because of charges of wrongdoing but because of their ethnicity," the AP said.

September 28, 2011 "Information Clearing House--  The fast developing predator drone technology, officially called unmanned aerial vehicles or UAVs, is becoming so dominant and so beyond any restraining framework of law or ethics, that its use by the U.S. government around the world may invite a horrific blowback.



First some background. The Pentagon has about 7,000 aerial drones. Ten years ago there were less than 50. According to the website longwarjournal.com, they have destroyed about 1900 insurgents in Pakistan’s tribal regions. How these fighters are so clearly distinguished from civilians in those mountain areas is not clear.



Nor is it clear how or from whom the government gets such “precise” information about the guerilla leaders’ whereabouts night and day. The drones are beyond any counterattack—flying often at 50,000 feet. But the Air Force has recognized that a third of the Predators have crashed by themselves.



Compared to mass transit, housing, energy technology, infection control, food and drug safety, the innovation in the world of drones is incredible. Coming soon are hummingbird sized drones, submersible drones and software driven autonomous UAVs. The Washington Post described these inventions as “aircraft [that] would hunt, identify and fire at [the] enemy—all on its own.” It is called “lethal autonomy” in the trade.



Military ethicists and legal experts inside and outside the government are debating how far UAVs can go and still stay within what one imaginative booster, Ronald C. Arkin, called international humanitarian law and the rules of engagement. Concerns over restraint can already be considered academic. Drones are going anywhere their governors want them to go already—Iraq, Yemen, Somalia, Libya, and countries in North Africa to name a few known jurisdictions.

US gives away billons in assets in Iraq
The United States Depart of Defense has found a nifty way of cutting costs in planning for the withdrawal of troops from Iraq. Rather than ship home millions of pieces of equipment from Americans bases abroad, the military is simply giving them away.
Nearly two-and-a-half million pieces of equipment, estimated at a cost of $250 million, have so far been given to the Iraqi government by the US military in the last year alone, reports The Huffington Post. As the DoD looks to empty out the bases that cost Americans billions of dollars towards erecting during the last decade, everything from air conditioning units to army tanks are being handed over to the foreign government in order to avoid the costly bill of shipping those supplies back to the States.
“It’s all sunk costs,” retired Army Maj. Gen. Paul Eaton tells HuffPo. “It’s money that we spent and we’re not going to recoup.”
Meanwhile, as the US hands over millions, they are scraping their pockets in order to make ends meet domestically. Yet again, the government is being posed with a possible shutdown in the days ahead, lest lawmakers find a way to balance their ledgers.
The United States spent over $2.4 billion on building posts in Iraq, reports the Congressional Research Service, and nearly $2 billion of that came from contracts with the US Army Corps of Engineer between 2004 and 2010 — and more than half of those deals were inked in 2005 alone.
While President Obama urges lawmakers to allow for the building up of America’s own infrastructure, it looks as if the country invested billions in the last decade overseas. Now that troops prepare to come home, however, all of that is being marked up as a loss.

UK’s 10-figure bill for ousting Gaddafi

Governmental estimates of US’s spending in the bombing campaign in Libya may have been one seventh of its actual cost, a military expert’s calculation suggests. The worst case figure is US$2.7 billion, or even more. 

Francis Tusa, editor of Defense Analysis, used data provided in answers to parliamentary questions and figures published by the Royal Air Force (RAF) since the operation in Libya started. 

He used two methods of calculation to estimate how much UK Ministry of Defense spent on bombing Muammar Gaddafi out of power. One method says the operation to the end of August took between $2.13 billion and $2.44 billion. The other one gives a potentially higher result – between $1.31 billion and $2.70 billion. 

The calculation did not include the cost of the continuing Libyan operation in September, or some other costs, like the transportation of hardware from the UK to the military base in Gioia del Colle, Italy. Earlier in June the government said it estimates overall cost of the campaign at $401 million.

Turkmenistan has rejected the gas pricing formula proposed by its prospective buyers in the Turkmenistan-Afghanistan-Pakistan-India (TAPI) pipeline project, a blow to the US-backed project that Washington had been pushing Islamabad to accept as an alternative to the gas pipeline from Iran.

In a meeting held on May 17 and 18 earlier this year, Kabul and New Delhi had accepted Islamabad’s suggestion that the three buyers collectively propose a gas-pricing formula based on Turkmenistan’s cost of production, rather than being linked to the price of oil, which is the standard global practise.
Pakistan’s formula would restrict Turkmenistan to a fixed profit margin, rather than the variable rate that is usually offered to countries exporting gas. Pakistan has signed an agreement with Iran that would link the gas import price to the international price of oil.
Sources told The Express Tribune that technical teams from the four countries, in a recent meeting of the Technical Working Group held in the Turkmen capital of Ashgabat, had set October 15 as the deadline to finalise pricing details and sign the gas sales purchase agreement.

The colourless leader of the Palestinian Authority, who wrote a 600-page book on his people's conflict with Israel without once mentioning the word "occupation", should have no trouble this evening in besting Barack Hussein Obama's pathetic, humiliating UN speech on Wednesday in which he handed US policy in the Middle East over to Israel's gimmick government.

Personally, I think "Palestine" is a fantasy state, impossible to create now that the Israelis have stolen so much of the Arabs' land for their colonial projects. Go take a look at the West Bank, if you don't believe me. Israel's massive Jewish colonies, its pernicious building restrictions on Palestinian homes of more than one storey and its closure even of sewage systems as punishment, the "cordons sanitaires" beside the Jordanian frontier, the Israeli-only settlers' roads have turned the map of the West Bank into the smashed windscreen of a crashed car. 


Sometimes, I suspect that the only thing that prevents the existence of "Greater Israel" is the obstinacy of those pesky Palestinians. But we are now talking of much greater matters. This vote at the UN – General Assembly or Security Council, in one sense it hardly matters – is going to divide the West – Americans from Europeans and scores of other nations – and it is going to divide the Arabs from the Americans. It is going to crack open the divisions in the European Union; between eastern and western Europeans, between Germany and France (the former supporting Israel for all the usual historical reasons, the latter sickened by the suffering of the Palestinians) and, of course, between Israel and the EU.

Palestine : Pulling the Thread of Self-Determination

There may be some truth in Israel's squawking that the Palestinian bid for state membership in the UN will delegitimize Israel. A cursory look over the history of Israel's creation reveals legal loopholes in which the legitimate state of the whole of historic Palestine remains intact.

Once the thread of self-determination is pulled, notably article 22 of the Covenant of the League of Nations which is still binding for all members states of the UN under UN Charter article 80(1), the legitimacy of the State of Israel on 88% of stolen land begins unravelling and  the settling for 22% of Palestinian soil becomes ludicrous.
Palestine's right to self-determination and independence has been affirmed repeatedly since the early 1900s. 
In 1916, the first commitment to Arab independence, over an area spanning Egypt to Persia,  was  given by the British government in correspondence between the British High Commissioner Henry McMahon and Grand Sharif Hussein, the guardian of the holy city of Mecca, in exchange for an Arab alliance with the Triple Entente to defeat the Ottoman  Empire.

On November 2, 1917, while Palestine was still part of the Ottoman Empire with a slight minority of Jews, a letter, the Balfour Declaration was sent to the British Zionists illegally promising to facilitate a Jewish national homeland in Palestine with the stipulation - "it being clearly understood that nothing shall be done which may prejudice the civil and religious rights of existing non-Jewish communities in Palestine".

"Its promise to use its best endeavours to facilitate the Zionist project could be interpreted as a promise to give to the Zionists what Britain did not have to give, in violation of the established legal maxim nemo dat quod non habet (nobody can give what he does not possess)."[1]

Aafia Allowed Visit From Family Member After 2-1/2 Years!

A message from Aafia's family after Aafia is allowed to visit with her brother for the first time in almost 2-1/2 years:

Last April we were both honored and stunned when a hundred Americans gave up part of their Saturday to stand outside Carswell Prison for several hours in the hot Texas sun to support our family's effort to contact Aafia. The actions of those courageous people responding to a call by The Peace Thru Justice Foundation paid off almost immediately. Five days later Aafia was allowed to call her family and she got to hear her children's voices for the first time in eight years.

This demonstration also set off an unexpected chain of events. Within days the Pakistani Consulate responsible for the affairs of its citizens in Texas visited Carswell and began communication with prison officials.

On the weekend of September 10, 2011, Aafia's brother was finally allowed to visit her.

This was their first visit in almost two and a half years.

The last time they saw each other was at her sentencing hearing almost a year ago. Throughout the trial and sentencing proceedings they were not allowed to speak to each other and one of the court officers made a point of sitting directly between them so they couldn't see each other.

We believe this visit is the direct result of the willingness of American citizens to exercise their First Amendment right "of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a  
redress of grievances."
Our family would also like to thank the International Justice Network for their advice and support.
Credit must also be given to Pakistan's Consulate in Houston for their assistance and contributions in this effort.

Requests have been made for future visits in October and November.

We are troubled because this visit required so much effort and persistence by so many. The system says that as long as Aafia obeys prison rules she is entitled to have visitors. We have not been told that Aafia has violated the rules. We have been told that "our normal rules don't seem to apply to your sister."

We are not asking for special conditions or priveleges for Aafia. We are asking that the rules that apply to all the other prisoners be applied to her too.

There are allegations of violations committed by both rebels and Colonel Gaddafi's troops. Most of the country is now under rebel control, with only a few pockets of Gaddafi loyalists still fighting. 77 U.S. soldiers and 25 Afghan civilians have been injured in a suicide bomber assault on an American military base in eastern Afghanistan. It's one of a series of attacks on the anniversary of September 11th. Earlier two Afghan civilians were killed after a large truck bomb exploded outside a NATO outpost. And two separate roadside bombings killed 10 Afghans close to the capital Kabul.

This comes on the heels of a UN investigation into the deadly attack, which was obtained by the New York Times.
