One-sided Syria war media biggest barrier to peace

Shades of Blood: Published on Jun 18, 2012 by RussiaToday The UN has demanded women, children, the elderly and injured to be evacuated from Syrian combat zones following the suspension of its observer mission. Heavy fighting continues in towns across Syria with scores of people being killed in clashes between the opposition and government troops.

On Sunday, activists say regime forces tried to root out rebels from urban areas by heavy shelling in the central city of Homs. They also say that, in the town of Douma, just outside the capital Damascus, rebels opened fire on a bus of soldiers killing eight.

The U.S. is now consulting its allies on what to do about the escalation of violence, but has acknowledged a Libya-style intervention to topple the Assad government would be difficult.

Israel’s strategy for Iran nuclear talks: ‘Comply...or else’

Israel is calling on its allies to threaten Iran convincingly with military action during the current talks in Moscow, media reports say. Tel Aviv believes Tehran does not take the threat of war seriously yet.
“The Iranians think this is just a warning. That people are not serious enough,” Israeli President Shimon Peres told CNN as the nuclear talks on the Iranian nuclear program are held in Moscow. He added that “if the Iranians will understand seriously that this [military action] is an option, maybe we shall not need it. If they think this is a bluff, then it may lead to a war.”

“The warning must be credible, the sanctions must be credible. So let’s first of all use the non-military means, indicating to the Iranians, ‘gentlemen, better you agree with a non-military confrontation than look for other options,'”Peres said.

The Israeli president accused Iran of building a nuclear weapon and said that “time is beginning to be out” for Iran.
Earlier, The Jerusalem Post newspaper cited an unnamed Israeli official as saying that Israeli government asked its allies to lend more credibility to the military threats against Iran.
“We would like the international community to say that these are our demands, these are our sanctions, comply…or else,” the official is quoted as saying. “Just as we think the sanctions have to be beefed up, this position must be clearly stated.”
The news comes as the P5+1 group consisting of China, France, Russia, the US, the UK and Germany is meeting Iranian nuclear (pic) negotiators in Moscow to discuss the conflict over Iran’s atomic work. Israel and its western allies suspect that Tehran is enriching uranium in a bid to secretly create a nuclear weapon. Iran insists that it needs it for civilian uses only.
The Moscow meeting is the third round of nuclear talks over a period of three months. It is aimed at defusing the tension over the Iranian nuclear program. The US and EU have issued strangling economic sanctions against the Iranian oil industry to gain leverage over Tehran. Meanwhile Israel has repeatedly said that it will bomb Iranian nuclear facilities sooner than allow it to build a nuclear weapon. No solid proof of intention to create a bomb on the part of Iran has ever been publicly presented.

Hidden US-Israeli Military Agenda: "Break Syria into Pieces"

by Prof. Michel Chossudovsky | Global Research, June 16, 2012

A timely article in the Jerusalem Post last month brings to the forefront the unspoken objective of US foreign policy, namely the breaking up of Syria as a sovereign nation state --along ethnic and religious lines-- into several separate and "independent" political entities. The article also confirms the role of Israel in the process of political destabilization of  Syria.  The JP article is titled: "Veteran Kurdish politician calls on Israel to support the break-up of Syria' (by Jonathan Spyer) (The Jerusalem Post (May 16, 2012)

Sherkoh Abbas, President of the US based Kurdistan National Assembly of Syria (KNA)  has "called on Israel  to support the break-up of Syria into a series of federal structures based on the country’s various ethnicities." (Ibid)
The objective of the US sponsored armed insurgency is --with the help of Israel-- to "Break Syria into Pieces".

The "balkanisation of the Syrian Arab Republic" is to be carried out by fostering sectarian divisions, which will eventually lead to a "civil war" modelled on the former Yugoslavia.

One possible "break-up scenario" pertaining to Syria, which constitutes a secular multi-ethnic society, would be the formation of separate and  "independent" Sunni, Alawite-Shiite, Kurdish and Druze states:   “We need to break Syria into pieces,” Abbas said. (Quoted in JP, op. cit., emphasis added).
"The Syrian Kurdish dissident argued that a federal Syria, separated into four or five regions on an ethnic basis, would also serve as a natural “buffer” for Israel against both Sunni and Shi’ite Islamist forces." (Ibid.).
Ironically, while Islamist forces are said to constitute the main threat to the Jewish State, Tel Aviv is providing covert support to the Islamist Free Syrian Army (FSA).

US to deploy more than 3,000 troops to Africa

All of those troops leaving Afghanistan during the next two years will have to go somewhere, right? The US Army will deploy thousands of soldiers across the continent of Africa during 2013.
The Army Times confirms that the US military gave the go-ahead for the mass deployment last month and that roughly 3,000 soldiers will soon be sent overseas, with more troops expected to be dispatched during the duration of the program. Maj. Gen. David R. Hogg, head of US Army Africa, says the initiative is part of a “regionally aligned force concept” that will allow American troops to forge relationships across Africa, where the US has not concentrated its soldiers among civilians to the same degree as other continents.
“As far as our mission goes, it’s uncharted territory,”  Hogg tells Army Times.
The program will put thousands of American troops in different African cities from anywhere for a few weeks to a few months, where they will learn about unfamiliar cultures and conduct training for threats and missions.
The US currently has a substantial military presence across the African continent, but nowhere to the degree that is has in other locales. More than 1,200 soldiers are currently stationed at Camp Lemonnier, Djibouti, and last October US President Barack Obama personally authorized the deployment of 100 troops to Uganda to aid in attempt to oust Lord’s Resistance Army leader Joseph Kony.
Around the time of that announcement, though, award-winning war correspondent Eric Margolis told RT that if Washington had humanitarian interests in mind while considering deployments to Uganda that it would not be going in alone.
“The US is also concerned about Chinese penetration in the region that they are going to gobble all the economical resources and earn influence on the regional governments. So the US maybe want to stop this Chinese advancement in central Africa,” said Marggolis. “It could be more legitimate, if the US did it in conjunction with disinterested nations – Russia, for example, or South Africa and Turkey. But the fact that they’re doing it on their own means they are doing it for the interests of their own policy.”
Hogg insists this time, though, that Americans won’t be sent overseas with a plan to prepare for war. “We are not trying to reproduce the United States Army in the 54 countries in Africa,” he says. The soldiers will, however, show foreign citizens some of the tactics used by American troops, as well as provide instruction on combating famine and disease.
“I’m not there to win their wars or settle their differences,” says Hogg.

What's next for Pakistan?

NATO supply routes through Pakistan still closed to US

NATO supply routes through Pakistan still closed to US

US negotiators will leave Pakistan without securing a long-sought agreement to reopen supply routes for NATO forces in neighbouring Afghanistan, the Pentagon said Monday. A Pentagon spokesman said the United States still hopes to broker a deal.

By News Wires (text)

REUTERS - The United States is withdrawing its team of negotiators from Pakistan without securing a long-sought agreement to allow trucks to supply NATO forces in neighbouring Afghanistan again, the Pentagon said on Monday.

The decision is the latest sign of deeply troubled ties and was announced just days after Defense Secretary Leon Panetta said the United States was reaching the limits of its patience because of the safe havens Pakistan offered to Islamist insurgents.

Pakistan's envoy to the United States had warned that Panetta's comments last Thursday in Kabul were unhelpful to efforts to narrow the differences between the two countries and came at a critical moment in negotiations.

Pentagon spokesman George Little said the United States still hoped to broker a deal with Pakistan. But he said the team of negotiators had been there for about six weeks and, given the lack an agreement, deserved a rest.

They could return at any time, if warranted, he added.

"I believe that some of the team left over the weekend and the remainder of the team will leave shortly," Little told reporters. "This was a U.S. decision."

Why Obama Will Free Jonathan Pollard.

President accepts Israel infallibility doctrine.
by , June 09, 2012

The US Department of Justice has released new files about convicted spy Jonathan Pollard’s bid for presidential clemency.  Pollard was sentenced to life in prison in 1987 after passing more than a million highly classified documents to Israel while working as an intelligence analyst for the US Navy.  Documents in the Freedom of Information Act response (PDF) reference 32 pages of government agency deliberative communications and 37 pages of new communications between Pardon Attorney Ronald Rogers and Pollard’s legal team — all produced since July of 2011. While the contents have been withheld, their existence signals that the Pollard commutation request may be nearing a conclusion within the Obama administration.  June 18 could mark the culmination of a massive lobbying campaign for release.  Obama’s dismal record on Israeli accountability suggests Pollard will soon walk free.
Released documents reveal that the Rabbinical Assembly — claiming to represent "1.5 million Jews worldwide" — passed a formal resolution asking Obama to commute Pollard’s sentence.    Rabbi David Zwiebel of Agudath Israel of America and Moshe Kantor of the European Jewish Congress also urged Pollard’s release. Letters demanding release also continue to flood in from former and current members of the US Congress. Steve Symms, Matt Salmon, Alan Simpson, Robert Wexler, Barney Frank, and Gary Ackerman joined the ranks of fellow representatives already demanding release.  Moshe Kahalon, Israel’s Minister of Communications, gushed to Obama "I have no doubt that your decision to release Jonathan Pollard now as a humanitarian expression of justice and compassion will bring great relief to many, and will remove this impediment to the friendship between our nations." Former New York City Mayor David Dinkins is also now rooting for Pollard’s release. Upping the ante, Israeli President Shimon Peres has explicitly linked his receipt of a US Presidential Medal of Freedom during a special June 18 White House dinner to Pollard’s freedom gambit — channeling even more intense pressure on Obama to take action in a specific context, place and time.
The linkage to Obama’s reelection bid is obvious. Israel’s Chief Rabbi Yonah Metzger brashly stated that releasing Pollard would be good for Obama’s reelection campaign. But what makes Pollard worth expending such formidable lobbying and political capital?  Why have Israel and its Western lobbying organizations made Pollard a key issue, almost on the same footing as massive US taxpayer-funded aid packages and confronting Iran?  The Israel lobby effort is trying to achieve much more than simply putting Congress and a sitting president through their paces.

CIA’s Phony Vaccination Program a Thorn in Aid Workers’ Side in Pakistan.

Aid Workers Flee the Country Under a Cloud of Suspicion

by Jason Ditz, June 08, 2012
It has now been roughly a year since the revelation that Osama bin Laden’s assassination was facilitated by a fake CIA-run vaccination program, and its impact on public health is still being felt nationwide, as most foreign aid workers were forced to flee the country in the face of public suspicion that they too were part of a spy ring.
“All of a sudden we were all doing subversive spy work,” noted one of the aid workers who had to leave. “Obviously we don’t like any of those associations.”

Pakistan was long rife with conspiracy theories, with many assuming that any US aid groups in the nation were part of a CIA or Blackwater scam. The revelation that in this case they actually were has reinforced that belief, and is likely to prevent those groups for returning and providing basic vaccinations in rural Pakistan for many years.
The CIA program posed as a vaccination aid group for children, but was actually collecting the DNA of the children and testing it to see if they had terrorist relatives. This program eventually found Osama bin Laden.
Former official Richard Perle defended the program in a debate earlier this week, saying that the CIA was giving “real vaccines” to the children. Though this was technically speaking accurate, it was extremely misleading.
In actuality, the vaccines the “aid group” were giving required three doses, and they never administered more than the first dose to any of the children and it doesn’t appear that any of them was ever vaccinated.

'Israeli subs can carry nuclear weapons'

By BENJAMIN WEINTHAL, JERUSALEM POST CORRESPONDENT06/04/2012

‘Der Spiegel’ claims that German-supplied Dolphin fleet has second-strike capability.

BERLIN – The German magazine Der Spiegel reported on Sunday that German-manufactured Dolphin-class submarinesdelivered to the Israel Navy can be equipped with technology for carrying nuclear warheads.

Over the years there has been a swirl of German media reports about the nuclear capability of Israel’s submarines, ever since the shipment of the first Dolphins arrived in the late 1990s.

In an article in Der Spiegel titled “Made in Germany,” experts from Israel and Germany confirmed that the “ships are armed with nuclear warheads. And Berlin has long been aware of that.”

The magazine asserts that interviews with Israeli and Western security officials and intelligence officers “leave no doubt” that German technology has permitted Israel’s navy to turn underwater vessels into second-strike capable nucleararmed submarines.

Defense Minister Ehud Barak would not confirm the nuclear capability of the Dolphin fleet, but told Der Spiegel “Germany helps to defend Israel’s security.

Germans should be proud that they have secured the existence of the State of Israel for many years.”

The Merkel administration declined to confirm in the magazine’s cover story that the Dolphin submarines are armed with nuclear weapons.
