AlJazeeraEnglish | June 09, 2010 - Zafar Jaspal, a security analyst in Pakistan, spoke to Al Jazeera in the wake of a deadly attack on a Nato convoy near Islamabad that was transporting supplies across the border into Afghanistan.

At least six drivers were killed in the raid of June 8, with a group of men armed with guns and grenades striking in the middle of night and torching more than 50 lorries, in the process destroying millions of dollars worth of fuel, food and other supplies.

Attacks on Nato convoys are not unusual in Pakistan, but what has got security forces worried this time is that the attack took place on the outskirts of the federal capital.

Over 50 tankers burn in new twin strikes in Pakistan.

Gunmen have set fire to at least 55 fuel tankers and killed a driver in two separate attacks on NATO convoys taking supplies to coalition forces in Afghanistan. The strikes in southwestern Pakistan are the latest in the string of attacks since the country closed a key border crossing point almost a week ago after a NATO helicopter attack in the border area, which killed three Pakistani troops. The closure of Torkham crossing has left hundreds of trucks stranded alongside the country's highways.

Militants in Pakistan have destroyed 27 tankers which were carrying fuel for Nato troops in Afghanistan.

The Taliban in Pakistan said it was behind the assault on a depot near Islamabad which left three people dead.

Pakistan has stopped Nato convoys crossing the Khyber Pass in response to a Nato air strike last week in which three Pakistani soldiers were killed.

Nato said on Monday it regretted the deaths but called for the crossing to be reopened.

Later on Monday, a US drone strike killed at least five militants in the town of Mir Ali in the troubled north-western Pakistani region of North Waziristan region, Pakistani intelligence officials said.

Iran ready for 'fair' talks on its nuclear programme

There has been a flurry of diplomatic activity on the fringes of the UN General Assembly

Iran is ready to resume talks on its nuclear programme if they are "fair", Iranian Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki is quoted as saying.

His comments came after the five UN Security Council permanent members and Germany said they hoped for an early negotiated solution to the dispute.

The UN has passed tough sanctions against Iran over its programme, which some fear is aimed at producing nuclear weapons.

Instead Russia, along with the US, China and the European Union say they're offering Iran a chance to negotiate an end to the long running dispute over its nuclear program.

Russia not to sell S-300 missiles to Iran

Russia will not sell its long-range surface-to-air missile systems, S-300, to Iran as they fall under UN Security Council sanctions against Tehran, the chief of the Russian Armed Forces General Staff has said.

“A decision has been made not to supply S-300s to Iran. [The air-defense systems] certainly fall under the sanctions,” Nikolay Makarov said on Wednesday, cited Interfax agency. He added that“there was an instruction from the leadership to stop the shipment and we are following it.”

General Makarov was also asked to comment on whether the respective contract with the Islamic Republic will be torn up. “Time will show. It will depend on Iran’s behavior,” he responded.

The deal, estimated to be worth around US$1 billion, was signed back in 2007. However, as yet no missiles have been delivered to Iran but the contract still has not been cancelled and the authorities are saying they are waiting for Iran’s reaction to the announcement, and how the decision is going to be taken by president.
