June 19, 2010 | NRWA chief calls on Israel to lift blockade A senior UN agency official for Palestinian refugees has indicated that Israel must lift its punishing blockade of Gaza instead of just easing it.
The Commissioner-General of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine refugees, Filippo Grandi, spoke to NHK on Friday.He referred to Thursday's announcement by Israel that it will partially ease its blockade following its raid on an aid flotilla taking supplies to Gaza that resulted in the death of 9 people. Grandi expressed skepticism, saying Israel had not given any details as to how it will ease its blockade.
He said the UN is calling for the blockade to be totally lifted.Grandi said he fears the UN agency might be forced to halt its efforts for Palestinian refugees in Gaza and neighboring countries this year. That move would mean halting the supply of food and the operation of schools and clinics.
Grandi is expected to visit Tokyo in late June to ask Japan to increase its financial assistance.
